DCE honors two outstanding researchers

Department of Clinical Epidemiology has awarded the 2025 Tove Nilsson and Jørn Olsen Awards to two exceptional researchers. Established in 2023 by Department of Clinical Epidemiology and Department of Clinical Medicine at Aarhus University and Aarhus University Hospital, these awards honor Tove Nilsson and Jørn Olsen for their unique contributions to the development of epidemiology.

The Tove Nilsson Award
Tove Nilsson has played a key role in the development of Department of Clinical Epidemiology over the past 15 years as head of administration and chief consultant, respectively. Tove Nilsson has established a unique professional infrastructure and built up many competencies that are relevant to the function of an international research department such as Department of Clinical Epidemiology.

Signe Sørup receives the 2025 Tove Nilsson Award
Signe Sørup earned an MSc in Public Health in 2009 and a PhD in 2014 from the University of Copenhagen. After postdoctoral training at Statens Serum Institute, she joined Department of Clinical Epidemiology as a postdoc and later as a clinical specialist. Her research focuses on the health effects of vaccines, using data from various registries.
Signe Sørup led a European study on the safety of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine during the pandemic, demonstrating excellent scientific skills, leadership, commitment to research quality and integrity, and outstanding work ethic. She has published over 30 papers in international journals with a clear focus on vaccines.
Signe Sørup is a dedicated team player who consistently embraces tasks and responsibilities with confidence. She completes every assignment to the highest standard, earning the well-deserved respect of colleagues both in Denmark and internationally.

The Jørn Olsen Award
Professor Jørn Olsen has been associated with Aarhus University for almost 50 years. He has an impressive international career and is one of Denmark's most internationally known researchers with more than 1,000 publications in international journals.

Lars Pedersen receives the 2025 Jørn Olsen Award
Lars Pedersen graduated from Aarhus University in theoretical statistics in 1999. While studying, he was affiliated with The Danish Epidemiology Science Center as a student assistant. After graduating, Lars Pedersen started working at the Department of Clinical Epidemiology where he earned his PhD in 2009. In 2012 he became the first professor of clinical data science at Aarhus University.
Lars Pedersen has significantly contributed to research, collaborating with international universities and pharmaceutical companies. He has helped establish one of the largest biostatistics departments in the Nordic countries and developed a unique data infrastructure using regional health data and later data from Statistics Denmark and the Danish Health Data Authority.
With around 380 publications, an H-index of 77, and over 25,000 citations, he is a prominent researcher and ambassador for Aarhus University.
Lars Pedersen is highly regarded by his colleagues and peers both nationally and internationally. He is known for his helpful nature and has successfully supervised over 20 PhD students.
