Large grant for project on shared care for patients with cirrhosis
Clinical Professor Peter Jepsen has secured a DKK 10 million grant from the Novo Nordisk Foundation to lead a visionary 5-year project focused on shared care for patients with cirrhosis.

The project addresses the need to transform the care for patients with cirrhosis, a chronic liver disease, by strengthening the collaboration between hospitals and general practitioners while empowering patients to know when and how to act on symptoms and blood test results.
The need for such transformation in chronic disease management extends beyond Denmark and cirrhosis, highlighting the broader relevance of Clinical Professor Peter Jepsen’s research.
Through two randomized pilot trials, Peter Jepsen will investigate how patients and general practitioners can be actively involved in managing liver disease. In addition, he will use Danish and English healthcare registries to monitor how patients with cirrhosis use their healthcare system and how it affects their prognosis.
“Like our politicians, we on the front lines of patient care know that a fundamental change is needed. Patients aren’t yours or mine. They are ours!"
says Peter Jepsen.
He continues:
"The problem is that no one has the time and resources to start that transformation process. But thanks to this grant, I now have the opportunity to help drive that change by working closely with GPs, patient organizations, municipalities, and my colleagues in the hospital.”
Collaboration
This project is a close collaboration between Department of Clinical Epidemiology and Department of Public Health - Institute of General Medical Practice at Aarhus University and Department of Hepatology and Gastroenterology at Aarhus University Hospital, in partnership with colleagues at the University of Nottingham.
